Grandpa Yeh was only seventeen when he left his home in Swatow, China to find work in another country. He had nothing but the clothes on his back and his grandmother’s precious rice cake mould. But life as a coolie was hard and he was terribly homesick. Then one day, he decided to make his Ah Ma’s png kueh, the Teochew rice cake that reminded him so much of home – and everything changed.

This is a charming tale of courage, family bonds and a culinary tradition that holds generations together. This is also an immigrant story of the Chinese diaspora in Southeast Asia, and spotlights the Teochews, the second largest dialect group in Singapore.

This 40-page picture book is written by multi-award winning author Eva Wong Nava, who also wrote The House of Little Sisters (by Penguin SEA) and East Asian Folktales, Myths and Legends (by Scholastic) and many others.
