Author Biography: Roger Nelson is an art historian, and Curator at National Gallery Singapore. He was previously Postdoctoral Fellow at Nanyang Technological University. His research considers the modern and contemporary art of Southeast Asia in relation to other images, texts, and urban spaces, often with a focus on intersections between media, and questions of methodology and historiography. Roger is the author of Modern Art of Southeast Asia: Introductions from A to Z, published by the Gallery in 2019. He is also co-founding co-editor of Southeast of Now: Directions in Contemporary and Modern Art in Asia, a journal published by NUS Press. Roger’s translation of Suon Sorin’s 1961 Khmer novel, A New Sun Rises Over the Old Land, will be published by NUS Press in 2019. He has also published numerous essays in scholarly journals, reviews for specialist magazines such as Artforum, as well as chapters in books and catalogue essays. He has curated exhibitions and other projects in Australia, Cambodia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Roger has spoken at universities and museums internationally, including at New York’s Museum of Modern Art (2013) and Munich's Haus der Kunst (2019). In 2018-2020 he joins "Site & Space in Southeast Asia," and in 2015-16 he joined “Ambitious Alignments: New Histories of Southeast Asian Art,” both research projects funded by the Getty Foundation's "Connecting Art Histories" initiative.
