Precalculus

Precalculus is designed for math majors and for students whose interest is in engineering and the sciences. The book falls into two parts. The first, up to and including Chapter 5, is used as the text for Math 18a, (Principles of Modern Mathematics I), which covers topics in College Algebra. Chapters 6 to 8 is intended for use in Math 18b (Principles of Modern Mathematics II), which include Trigonometry and additional Algebra topics involving Sequences, Mathematical Induction and the Binomial Theorem. The material on Polar Coordinates, which is necessary in Calculus, is included in Chapter 7. We include an appendix on technology exercises to help facilitate students’ understanding of the course content, through visual means.The improvements in this second edition of Precalculus evolved out of the generous comments from the teachers and students who used the previous editions of the book. For this edition, we have reworked the text, added chapter openers and revised the exercises to ensure that the book is more readable and helpful to the students. We also hope that teachers will find this book useful in helping the students develop the skills they need to be successful in calculus.
