The Origins of Modern Art in France, 1880-1939

This catalogue was published in conjunction with an exhibition of the same name, jointly organised by the French Embassy in Singapore, Singapore Art Museum, National Arts Council and Association Française d'Action Artistique, under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, France. The exhibition showcased some of the most significant masterpieces belonging to the French public collection, as well as paintings and sculptures from private collections. It aimed to illustrate the evolution of ideas and shapes in Western art, through various movements including impressionism and post-impressionism, fauvism, cubism to abstraction, and Dadaism and surrealism, as demonstrated in the art of French artists or foreign artists who worked in France.
