Into the Modern highlights the continuing relevance of Impressionism, expressing the emergence of modernity from the unique perspective of the artists. Curatorial texts point to the intersection of Impressionism with modern experiences, like changing rural and urban landscapes, the rise of tourism, the social life of the city and gender. Expanding discussion on the movement, commissioned essays examine its legacies within Southeast Asia and offer an ecological reading of Impressionism. Full-colour plates of iconic artworks are paired with vivid photographs that illustrate the sociopolitical contexts of 19th-century France.
