Written in both English and Chinese, this catalogue features some of the prolific works of Liu Kang, one of Singapore's pioneer artists credited with developing the Nanyang Style. The accompanying exhibition presented a spectrum of Liu Kang’s works on paper, including sketches, drawings and pastel works, with subject matter ranging from nudes, portraits, figures, still life and landscape. In showcasing selected oil paintings, the exhibition attempted to demonstrate the relationship between the artist's preparatory sketches and 'finished' works. The exhibition also showcased, for the first time, sketches by Liu Kang portraying the immediate post-war scenes, including renderings of Japanese soldiers working at the field in front of the Padang. Other sketches capture the early years during Singapore's nation building, ranging from street scenes to depictions of the Samsui Women.
