Gao Xingjian was born in China in 1940. He is known by many as a novelist, having won the Nobel Peace Prize for Literature in 2000 for his book, Soul Mountain. But Gao is also a renowned painter and dramatist. He has held solo exhibitions in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, US, France (where he is now a citizen), Germany and Spain. In November 2005, an exhibition of his ink paintings was held at the Singapore Art Museum. This book, bilingual in English and Chinese, was published to mark the occasion. About 60 pieces of his works were exhibited, all of which are illustrated by full-page plates in this volume. His catalogue of works is preceded by an essay by Dr Quah Sy Ren of the Nanyang Technological University on Transculturalism and Gao Xingjian's Theatre.
