E-cigarettes, also known as vape devices or by trade names such as JUUL, are handheld devices that aerosolize liquid commonly containing nicotine, humectants and flavorings. Used by 1 in 5 high school students in 2020, they are the most common tobacco product used by youth. The increased prevalence of e-cigarette use has been linked to a variety of health issues such as nicotine addiction, vaping related pulmonary illnesses, seizures, increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and exposure to carcinogens, among others.

This first-of-its-kind book begins with an introduction and background to the historical context of tobacco and smoke as well as the epidemiology of e-cigarette use. The next few chapters focus on the different types of e-cigarette products as well as their marketing and sales information. Health effects for both long-term and short-term users are then discussed as well as those effects for non-users such as poisonings, injuries and second-hand aerosol exposure. The second half of the book has a high emphasis on public health issues as well as federal, state and local e-cigarette policies and advocacy efforts. The book closes out with recommendations for counseling, treatments and prevention before a final overall conclusion.

The health hazards of e-cigarettes are an increasingly overwhelming problem among today’s youth. This book is a key reference for pediatricians and adolescent medicine physicians in addition to all other healthcare providers. It also serves as a useful guide for other health care professionals such as tobacco use treatment providers and public health experts.
