On 3rd March 2018, the Indian Heritage Centre organised a conference entitled The Word & The Image: in Art & Society in conjunction with the exhibition Symbols and Scripts: The Language of Craft. The exhibition and conference were built on the premise that the Indian craftsperson has been a champion of India’s traditions, producing an amalgamation of inherited ancient wisdom and artistic inspiration. This publication emphasises how script and symbolism have been the twin inspirations for the artisan, who has for centuries, used the word as image, and the image as word to create a powerful rhetoric. In fact, craft objects have long been incorporated into the material culture of Indian communities in the subcontinent and amongst the global diaspora. These essays remind us of the legacy of our rich Indian heritage as children of the diaspora, reconnecting us with our roots.
